Bungeoppang

The Korean Waffles

A common winter street scene in Korea is that of food carts selling bungeoppang on street corners. Bungeoppang is made by pouring flour dough into the fish-shaped cast iron mold and filling it with red bean, cream paste. Bungeoppang can vary but the taste is always a crowd-pleaser.
For many Koreans, the sight of freshly baked bungeoppang and its sweet aroma wafting through the crisp winter air is a signal that winter has truly arrived.

Hotteok

The Korean Pancakes

“These delicious little treats I can call it ‘piece of heaven’ “

Hotteok is probably the most friendly winter snack favoured by all Koreans alike.
Hotteok is made with dough from glutinous rice flour mixture and filled with a mix of brown sugar with cinnamon. The round and flat pancakes are then lightly cooked on a griddle. Some variations include hotteok stuffed with vegetables. Be careful when you take that first bite; although the brown-sugar filling is delicious, it is often very hot. Like many of the other street foods in Korea, hotteok is a steal at one of the top favoured street snacks.

  • “It’s a good snack for a rainy day. Hot, fresh and lil sweet. The red bean paste is not as sweet as other places. Love it so much.”

  • “A Korean owned sweet/savoury waffles and pancakes, ready to eat, HOT in hand. We had the 5 for $5 fish waffles, with mixed fillings of custard/red bean/veggies. The veggies one is much flavorful then we expected, had to go back and grab another 5 of them. My 3-year-old loves the custard filling one, ate almost two of them by himself!”
